ED KIENHOLZ OWES ME 2/5¢ takes as its premise a brief personal exchange I shared with Kienholz (see CONCEPT PLATE pdf). Here I explore the theme of debt – that between language and objects, that paid to and borrowed from history, and that of the profit and loss of aesthetic, cultural, and monetary currency. The installation stands as an announcement of an event to come. The completion of the piece requires that I read an accompanying novel inside the installation as it is completely buried underground and disappears from view. The purchaser of the work agrees to this stipulation. The installation was sold to a German collector at Art Basel 36 in 2005. By agreement between me, Galerie Catherine Bastide, and the buyer, the owner will keep the work installed in his home for ten years. After the burial he keeps the concept tableau and the relic box. The dry-erase drawings are relics and not part of the initial purchase – they remain for sale to help fund the burial. The images will last as long as their future owners protect them.
(CONCEPT PLATE Deutsch pdf)
