GALERIE CATHERINE BASTIDE
Rue Vandenbrandenstraat 1
1000 Brussels - Belgium

February 16 - March 31, 2007
For my first solo exhibition in Brussels I turned the main gallery into the inside of a stomach, the upper gallery into the inside of a head and united the two with a performance. The piece began with a book I found titled The Annals of Roentgenology, Vol. X: Peptic Ulcers in the trash in New York. It included x-ray images of peptic ulcers with arrows superimposed on their surfaces showing the problem areas. I drew all 218 images in black and white chalk (these lined the upper walls of the main gallery). I also wanted to put an arrow inside the stomach, so I created the character of an arrow who would enter the stomach and become the cause of the ulcer. For the upper gallery I collected x-ray images of individuals whose heads had "ingested" arrows, nails, pipes, hooks and other objects. (All of these patients survived their head injuries). I also drew these images in black and white chalk and added the physical representation of the implement. My final inclusion was a series of syntactical objects - arrows made of flexible plywood.
